Recently, I attended a “Mathematics Workshop for Parents” in a local Primary School. This workshop is a initiative by the school to share word problems solving methods with the parents so that the latter can better understand what their kids are taught in school. Hence, be able to teach their kids if need be.
I noticed a common question that often been asked in such workshop, which is to use algebra and simultaneous equations to solve the word problem instead of using model drawing. This question is asked by the parents because in the past we are taught to solve word problems using such methods. However, the kids today are not taught algebra and simultaneous equations till when they are in Upper Primary.
Most parents will think that regardless what method is used to solve the problem, important thing is the answer is correct. This is totally wrong. After tutoring kids for several years, I realise the parents are doing more harm than help to teach their kids what are not taught in school. This is especially true to weaker kids who are already struggling to grasp the concept.
A Peep Into The Kids’ Mind
Let us take a peep inside the kids’ mind. The teacher in school teaches one method and parents at home teaches another. Both methods arrive at the same answer. The kids will start to wonder which method should they use; teacher or parents?
Assuming the kids decide to use the parents’ method, depending on individual teacher, the kids’ assignment may be rejected. The teacher may ask the kids to redo using the teacher’s method. The reason could be the teacher wanted the kids to strengthen their foundation and not learn what is termed as advanced methods or what is not taught yet.
Assuming the kids decide to use the teacher’s method, parents who do not understand model drawing will continue to use their method to explain to their kids. At this point, the kids will either get more confused or totally switch off telling their parents this is not what the teacher taught them.
Reinforcement Is More Important
It is better to reinforce what is being taught in school today than otherwise. Personally, I think it is better to spend some time understanding what method is taught in school. Through aligning with the teacher’s method, the kids will avoid unnecessary confusion. I will share two stories on this topic “Caring Parents, Confused Kids” in my future post.
I got the idea and I really like it that way. I think I should strengthen my mind to follow the method of her future teachers. Thank you for this one! Great help.
