Tips for New Dads – Newborn Preparation

There are a couple of things to sort out prior to your newborn arrival. Here are some essential things for newborn preparation.

  • A Place to put the Baby Cot.  Which room or space will be meant to put a baby cot? Some will prefer to have the baby cot in another room, away from the mummy so that the mummy can have sufficient rest. While others prefer to have the baby close to the mummy. For my case, the baby is put in our room close to both of us. If you engage a nanny or have experienced elders, then putting in another room is a good option too. Discuss with your wife. It is actually quite fun planning for it.

  • Choosing the Baby Cot.  When considering for a baby cot (British English) or crib (American English), do bear in mind that the bed is designed to restrict the child to the bed. Comfort and safety is of utmost importance when choosing the right baby cot. Remember that your baby, on reaching 12 months, he / she will have the ability to stand up and also grab hold of surrounding things. Hence, do make clearance from curtains or unnecessary items. Choosing a sturdy baby cot is equally important. Do refrain from buying a baby cot based solely on aesthetic purposes.

  • Stocking Up of Supplies.  Supplies like diaper (in American and Canadian English) or a nappy (in Commonwealth English), baby powder, cotton, wet wipes, towel, baby clothes and mittens are some of the essential that will be needed. Start your shopping.

  • Other Necessities.  Stroller, baby car seat, baby walker, milk bottles, sterilizer, baby detergent and other washing equipment are other necessities that will be needed. Do start your shopping; bring your wife along. Sufficient walking is good for her.

  • Choosing a Name.  Start thinking. This is the most challenging, but also the most fun. I named my three kids all with letter J; Jovan, Jenell, and Jolynn. The smallest daughter was named Jolynn taking after ‘Jo’ from the brother Jovan, ‘lynn’ with repeating letters similar to my second daughter Jenell. Hence, JOlyNN.

It may sound like a lot to prepare. But trust me, you have ample time since the newborn will only arrived in months later.
