Expectation of your toddler
By the end of this month, your toddler should be able to
- Pull himself / herself up to standing position
- Move from place to place while holding on to something
- Get into a sitting position (this usually happens around 7-8 months of age)
- Crawling (this usually happens around 8-9 months of age)
- Clap hands
- More indicative forms of expressing what he / she wants in ways other than crying
Your toddler will probably be able to
- Put an object into a container (by 12.5 months)
- Imitate activities (by 12.5 months)
- Stand alone (by 12.5 months)
- Use 1 recognizable word
Your toddler may possibly be able to
- Drink from a cup
- Use 2 recognizable words (by 12.5 months)
- Point to a desired object (by 12.5 months)
- Scribble
- Walk well
Your toddler may even be able to
- Use a spoon / fork (but not exclusively)
- Remove an article of clothing
- Point to 1 body part when asked
- Use an object in imitation
In the event your toddler has not reached these milestones, do not be overly anxious. This rate of development may well be normal for your child, as some children are late bloomers. Importantly, it needs to be evaluated or consulted with a doctor. Check with the doctor if your toddler seems unresponsive, doesn’t smile, makes few or no sound, doesn’t seem to hear well, is perpetually irritable, or demands constant attention. For the one year old who was born prematurely, the toddler will often lags behind others of the same chronological age. This developmental gap progressively narrows and generally disappears entirely around age two.
